GRADE: Second Class Honours Division One (2:1)
Joe embarked on his educational quest in 2019, enrolling in the Pathway to a Degree Course, a programm specifically crafted for adults resuming their studies with aspirations of advancing to degree-level education.
Opting for the Exploring the Past pathway, Joe completed a curriculum that parallels 50% of a degree's first-year content. This pathway was meticulously designed to equip learners with the requisite skills and insights, ensuring a solid foundation for further studies. Moreover, it promises an interview opportunity for degree programs within the School of History, Archaeology, and Religion (SHARE), thereby paving the way for Joe's academic advancement.
In my final year, I was challenged to think more deeply about the nature of historical developments. I developed my skills in analyzing sources and writing history through studying a range of specialist modules on offer.
Supported by one of the expert staff, I planned and undertook a research dissertation on a topic that was linked to an area I studied as part of my degree. The dissertation provided an opportunity for me to develop advanced independent research skills and an in-depth knowledge of a research topic, fully supported by an academic supervisor and a programme of workshops. I generally found the dissertation to be the most enjoyable and exciting part of my studies.
This Research Integrity Training Programme provides an introduction to the important principle of 'Research Integrity' and the key themes and considerations applicable across all research disciplines at Cardiff University.
Completion of this training will help researchers to understand their responsibilities and how to ensure that research is conducted to the highest professional standards. It will also help researchers identify where further information and guidance may be obtained.
2023 FINAL YEAR DISSERTATION
Dissertation Awarded 2:1 (68)
In the aftermath of the Second World War, a multi-racial youth club emerged in Barry, embodying a beacon of hope and unity in a time of rebuilding and reconciliation. My dissertation journey led me to unearth this local treasure, revealing its profound impact on fostering community integration and understanding across racial and ethnic divides.
With a commitment to critical thinking and independent research, I delved into the archives, piecing together the story of this pioneering initiative. Through meticulous evaluation of historical evidence, I uncovered the strengths and challenges faced by the youth club, shedding light on its role in shaping a more inclusive community.
This research not only honed my skills in historical analysis and communication but also underscored the importance of local history in understanding broader societal dynamics. The youth club in Barry serves as a powerful example of how grassroots efforts can bridge divides, promote mutual understanding, and lay the groundwork for lasting social cohesion.
My work aims to inspire further exploration into similar post-war community initiatives, inviting comparisons and insights into their long-term impacts on race relations and community identity. It is a testament to the resilience and unity of diverse communities coming together to forge a path of reconciliation and hope.
As we share this journey on my website, I invite readers to reflect on the enduring lessons of Barry's youth club. Together, let's celebrate the power of diversity in building stronger, more united communities.
